Red Bull Arena Inspires High Hopes Amongst The Team
By: Dave Martinez | March 16th, 2010
One can’t help but be taken in by the beauty and enormity of Red Bull Arena. “Now we have a soccer stadium,” head coach Hans Backe said. “You can compare this one with probably the best ones in the Premiership in England of the same size. It’s top class.” And that is coming from a man who would know, first hand.
Yes, it seems that the long awaited Arena is everything a fan could ask for, and more. From the thick smell of a grass pitch to the intimate atmosphere, the Bulls new home is creating an infectious atmosphere of optimism amongst the team heading into a vital 2010 season.
“We’ll go undefeated,” joked Kevin Goldthwaite. “But seriously, I think we will be able to compete. In the MLS, there is a lot of parity. One year to the next, you never know what is going to happen. The main thing is getting to the playoffs. As you saw last year, a team like Real Salt Lake won it who were what, .500 or so in the regular season. My expectations are making this Arena our home, and hopefully make it incredibly difficult for teams to come in here and play.”
And by the looks of things, Red Bull Arena could be that cauldron of doom for opposing teams, but it will be up to the Bulls to make it that way. “Once you have a strong start, it is going to carry you on for the rest of the season,” said Red Bulls keeper Bouna Coundoul. “You don’t want to start the season, with this kind of facility, in a negative way. You want to have a positive start that will carry the team through the season.”
The first chance to see the Bulls carry on that kind of positivity is this weekend against Santos FC, who will be featuring Brazilian mega star Robinho in the starting 11. The game has already sold out, which may be a first for this franchise, and the atmosphere amongst the Red Bull faithful and the local Portuguese community is sure to be electric.
The future start’s this Saturday night.
