Red bull wakeup call

By: Chris | May 6th, 2007

Due to the failing of basic cable, I spent the first 67 minutes of last night’s match staring cheering on our boys via MLS match tracker. Needless to say, I hit the hay dreaming of another NYRB victory, only to wake to a nightmare 3-3 draw.

Ok, so maybe a draw on the road keeps us unbeaten, but two goals in two minutes (one the result of a questionable call) and it sounds as if we were robbed. But regardless of why these goals were scored, the fact that we view a draw on the road as a virtual defeat speaks volumes for the team’s progress this season.

Symbolic of this progress last night has been the resurgence of Clint Mathis and the emergence of Dane Richards—a player already being compared to Shawn Wright Phillips by NYRB fans (although it is important to note Richards actually sees the field)

But while it seems we controlled the game for long periods, to let in two goals speaks for our inexperience. It is interesting to note the lapses in concentration came after an unfortunate injury to Walrus—leaving us short on experience at the back.

I mean did Chris Brown read my column? If so, he is not very polite (you know, scoring on us and not leaving a comment), but he did underscore the need for a more experienced defender. Could the rumors be true? Only time will tell, but it is fairly safe to say the water cooler will thus forth contain Red Bull going in to the second half.
