Red Bulls Charge At Barcelona Defender Rafa Marquez

By: Dave Martinez | November 27th, 2009

marquezSo, is this just a little something to generate a vibe around the club, or are the Red Bulls serious here?

Reports from Spain and stateside claim that the Red Bulls have thrown their name into the ring of fire that is the Rafa Marquez negotiations. For weeks, Marquez and Barcelona have been unable to secure a contract, though word has it they will be signed away by Monday. Regardless, the Bulls have made an offer to the Mexican great to come stateside where he would be treated like a hero instead of just another aging cog in a super machine.

Marquez would be a definite draw at Red Bull Arena. He is an icon to the passionate Mexican fanbase, and a sex symbol to the ladies as well; a Mexican Beckham if you will. On the footballing side, Marquez would do much to solidify what has been a porous defense, becoming the steady centerback anchor this team has not had since the days of Jeff Parke.

Now, reader, before you attempt reading this over again, no, you are not suffering the aftershocks of eggnog overconsumption; this is real. What do you think?

While I don't see it happening, if Rafa Marquez was to play in Red Bull NY his role wouldn't be exclusive defensive anyway, he'd likely either be a midfielder or reinvent the libero role in MLS. He'd be one of the leagues most technically gifted defenders and its best passers, though his slowness and occasional self-destruction would still be there.

Sadly I don't see it happening, while his career is on the slow down his priority is to stay with Barca where he has the chance of becoming the longest serving foreign player in club history.
  • Is that why the screen is all sticky Pico?! Damn!

Marquez would be one of the few defensive DP's I would jump on in a second. It immediately fills three criteria needed for DP success; he is a brand name, a draw and a talented back at that.

:/ we won't get Marquez or Henry. Something tells me our lovely organization will blow it.

I just forwarded the post to a Mexican friend of mine. I think he shot his load at the mere possibility.

So are you saying that we are opening next season with El Kaiser de Michoacan and Titi Henry? What's next? Should we also get Rikkard?

First bit of good team news in a while. I'd welcome this signing.
  • Haha, I'm doing my best to pump up your visitor numbers. Ugh, what made me go to law school again? I'm fairly certain I should be doing nothing right now.
But I am really excited for this Bulls season. The chance to actually go to games in a real stadium is going to be sweet.
  • My brother BMatt, I am working! I can post 10 times today and it wouldnt even matter . . . lol. QUIET day at the office for sure.

Amazing watching the actual visitor numbers go so LOW this weekend. But I tredge on regardless.

Happy Day After Turkey Slaughter Day buddy!
  • Dave, its the Friday after Thanksgiving. You should be mailing this in, not actively posting.
