Reyna and The DP Slot
By: Dave Martinez | July 15th, 2008
Questions abound regarding that Reyna DP slot. Do we own it? Will we use it?
Ives is clarifying things, as always. The Bulls won’t be using the DP slot this season - mainly due to salary cap constraints. But they plan on using it on a marquee player for the opening of Harrison next summer.
So don’t fret - that DP slot isn’t going anywhere - its just taking a nap till next season.
George Welcome, if good and affordable, could make a valuable impact. Maybe some other forward decides to try out Jersey for a change. Who knows. But until then, erase your DP dreaming - its Dane Richards at forward with Angel for the rest of the season. Thats my bet.
So - are the Red Bulls wise to save the DP for next season? Have recent additions compensated for our lack of depth up top? Or are you livid that the Bulls arent going to at least jab a finger in the eye of Chicago and make a run for McBride? Share your thoughts.

McBride would be nice, but dont you think a team like RBNY needs a Beckhamesque figure to fill the stands with fans who are very real, unlike the LA not so faithful…
The question is who!?

Gian - thats what they are looking for. 1 more year - Henry? I couldnt think of another marquee name, but that would be the move right there. Who knows.
I totally agree on your McBride point though. Just a nice jab in the eye would have been nice.

Well it is still like Christmas in July…and you are still writing eloquently and accurately! Can not be greedy on wanting that DP anyhow, as it needs to be well planned out, long term. We need 2 new forwards, one young, one veteran for depth…and umm…those things they call *Goooooolll*! McBrides style would not work well with JPA, whereas my darling Colombian forward would be a perfect dynamic fit!!!

They’ll save it for Thierry Henry for a year from now. Or perhaps, they’ll sign him in the next few weeks. That would shake things up a bit eh?

I am with Travis. Absolutely.

Eto anyone? Surely a move here over Uzbekistan makes more sense?

Eto! Wow, that would be absolutely amazing. Though the name recognition thing will still fall short. Not many Beckhams and Henry’s out there.

Eto is playing in Uzbekistan? How sad. Yeah, that guy is a demon and could be perfect

Eto’o is not playing in Uzbekistan…a team made him a joke of an offer, that’s all…

I dont think Gian said that Eto is playing there - just that the US would be a more appealing option.

oh ok. Eto’o still has a while before he would consider coming to the US.

Although I think an attacking combo of JPA and Henry would be sensational, do you think it’s more practical to use the other DP slot on a top flight Mid? A quality striker such as JPA would be just as good paired with a quality young striker. I think it’s very realistic to pluck one of the young English strikers who have no realistic chance of ever making the ENT. Check the Championship Division or even League 2. Then I would use all of my power to go to Argentina and see what it takes to lure Juan Roman Riquelme away from Boca Juniors. The man has no intention of playing for Villareal again and I think that would put the team and the league on the map a la Beckham, only that Riquelme is insane and real soccer fans would see the league as making steps in the right direction towards legitimacy. If people really believed Ronaldinho was realistic then I think Riquelme could be lured as well. Picture this team:
Pietravallo
Richards-Rojas
Riquelme
Young English Guy-JPAI would think that team has a chance to be very good. Your thoughts?

Hey Tim, Welcome.
Riquelme is a name that has been tossed around the New York circles for quite some time. And in many ways, he is a realistic option for the team, more so than a Ronaldinho. Since Riquelme has been shunned by Europe for his “build the team around me or else” attitude, I think his options are limited, and a possible move to MLS wouldnt be completely out of the question. But weigh against that the fact that he gets more credibility and visibility with the national squad if he just stayed with the limelight that Boca gives at home.
In the end, Henry’s name recognition would be more appealing than Riquelmes and I feel Red Bull is looking for that type of superstar that transcends the sport. The charismatic Henry would definitely be the dream goal for this club.
btw - Rojas will be playing attacking mid. If he is there, and say Hunter Freeman is moved to a wing, with DVB on the other, and a center tandem of Stammler and Pietra, I think the team would be set from the back to the middle. We still need a complimentary striker.
And I would never be against Roman being here. That would make two Argies on the team, which would leave me doubley happy

Thanks for the response Dave. If I asked you to construct a realistic XI for the RB’s, whether it be players currently on the team; or with a different team in MLS, or maybe a possible hidden gem player somewhere in the world, who would it be? Also, we can just assume that somehow the player status will work itself out. I’m very interested to hear your take.
