Rivaldo to RBNY?, Or: One Aging Brazilian’s as Good as the Next
By: Martha | January 26th, 2007
Less than 24 hours after RBNY fans got the sad(ish) news that Ronaldo was in Milan, not New Jersey, ESPN Desportes has allegedly reported that Rivaldo — Ronaldo’s predecessor at Milan in the Much Heralded Brazilian Transfer department — received a great offer from an MLS side and will be officially in the league in a matter of hours. For reasons I’m far too uninformed to understand, the folks at Big Soccer are sure that, if the story is true, the bid came from the Red Bulls, who will make the Brazilian their second designated player.
Arena did indicate during the Claudio Reyna press conference that the remaining DP slot would be spent on a striker, but Rivaldo is slightly different from Tin Delgado, the player original mentioned as the club’s target. The Brazilian is currently in Greece with Olympiakos where, despite being 34 years old, he’s having tremendous success and is a key to the club’s run at the top of the Greek league. Plus, his good years there have gone a long way towards erasing the memory of his dismal stop in Milan a few years ago.
So, either another (once) world-class player on the verge of bringing his impressive old-man striking (and diving) skills to MLS, or, as Rivaldo told the press this summer, he’s a few months from retirement and ending his career in an Olympiakos shirt. Either way: Hooray for transfer rumors! Did you hear the one about Figo? Oh, wait.

Ha! Finally got comments to work. I have to go in through Internet Explorer rather than AOL, because The Offside is making AOL crash. But Welcome to the whole MLS gig. (I’ll be back!)

Rivaldo? Seriously? MLS is quickly going from a league of young American unknowns to aging foreign has-beens.

And now the funny thing is, your Italy blog won’t accept my comment about Matrix. It keeps telling me “you’ve already said that” while not posting the original comment.
And to keep this mildly topical, I was just reading something about World Cup 2002 where I believe it said that Rivaldo was a superstar. So, hey, you only have to go back a few years, right?

Bob. You are a dumbass. Let me tell you right now, Rivaldo is worth 50 times more than the whole US National Team. If he was 70 years old with diabetes, he’d be worth the hundreds of millions of dollars they would pay him if he came to America. Brazil doesnt not have has-beens. Their players remain phenomenon’s until they die and then they become legends.
