RSL/RBNY Preview: In Like A Lion, Out Like . . . .
By: Dave Martinez | October 8th, 2008
The Red Bulls will be following Leonardo the Lion and the rest of RSL to Rio Tinto Stadium for the inauguration of the teams new home. It is this blogger’s hope they don’t go there bearing any gifts . . .
That means no own goals.
No more than 1 goal against.
At least 2 goals scored for.
An absence of that dreaded 4-5-1.
An attitude that isn’t all about coming away with a point.
Those, my friends, are gifts.
This is a game where the Bulls need to explode on the field more like Lions (pun intended). Take advantage of the fact that RSL does not have the home field advantage in this one. Think about it - no longer will they know every minute detail of their hard as cement, galactic ball bouncing turf. They will have to experience this pitch in full mode, just as the Red Bulls will. In this sense, the playing field is quite literally leveled - and everyone will be showcasing their skill on grass (as God intended).
Of course, the Bulls will not have underachieving acquisitions Jorge Rojas or Gabe Cichero available, and the speedy winger/forward Dane Richards is on a Jamaican call up, so they go in heavily undermanned. But they have pieces in their lineup that can seamlessly make the transition to the 11 without significantly disturbing production or depleting the bench. How?
Rojas - CAM - Magee
Cichero - CB - Parke and Boyens/Goldthwaite (forcing Jimenez on the D wing if Goldie mans center)
Dane Richards - Mbuta. In the famous words of the great trainer “Mick” - “We need speed! Speed is what we need!” Mbuta fills the bill.
And what would this look like in the end?
———-Angel—Kandji———-
DVB—–Stammler–Pietra—Mbuta
Goldie—-Parke—-Boyens—Leitch
————Conway—————Bench Options: Ubi, Woly, Mendes, Borman, Touray, Magee

————-Magee————–
DVB———-Pietra———Mbuta
Goldie—-Parke—-Boyens—Leitch
————Conway—————Bench Options: Ubi, Woly, Mendes, Borman, Touray, Stammler
Does that look so bad? Not really! And you still have depth on the bench. Its up to the Bulls and Coach Osorio to take the game to RSL. The conditions call for it. And what better way to showcase their playoff push then to do it on National TV? Put the rest of the league on notice and say “The Bulls ain’t Dead Yet!”
If they don’t go in aggressively, Leonardo and RSL will eat their playoff hopes alive. Count on it.

I think the starting 11 will certainly be more exciting to watch, but this is really a raw deal not breaking for the international dates. And Dave, whats your opinion on Kassell so far - I haven’t seen him play but I’m just looking at his stats - 1 goal, 5 assists in 11 games. Seems a little short of the hype. Your thoughts?

Ignoring international dates, to me, is an insult to the average football fans intelligence. Basically, MLS feels the US fan wouldn’t understand nor accept an interruption in the middle of their season, since no other league does this. Guys, we can handle it. Believe me.
And as far as any youngster, its tough to judge strictly on stats. Sure, he has been touted as the best thing since the infamous sliced bread, but it takes time for a kid to actually learn the game. Soccer is such a chess match, and youngsters would rather play HALO. Get me?

Hey Dave, I like your 2nd lineup, but insert Stammler for Leitch. Leitch is serviceable IMO, but Stammler is too valuable to start on the bench. Also, how about a 4-3-3 with Magee up top with Kandji and JPA?

Also, I think Ubi deserves some playing time. Come on JCO!
Viva la red bulls! I’m so pumped up for this game! I’m feelin’ an upset for rsl!

. . . and upset for the Red Bulls? I figure we are the underdogs in this one.
But back to the 4-3-3 . .. . .. . I love the 4-3-3. And MLS teams are so hesitant to use it. But if we played Kandji central and a bit closer to goal, switch Angel and Magee and put them a tad behind kandji, in a middle bumrush. It can work but it won’t happen.
btw - as far as Ubi goes, who would you sit? Not that easy . . .

I love your 4-3-1-2. Thats my preferred set up. I think it could work really well for RBNY. They need a win here.

Not start him, I meant use him as a sub, but not in the 89th minute!

Yea I am with you JG. Kid deserves as much.
Matt - 4-3-1-2 is the all time fav for me. Boca uses it pretty exclusively, so I am accustomed to it, and have seen how fluid it can be with the proper CAM. Join us tonite on the liveblog! You too JG!
