Shep Messing Sounds Off On Red Bull. Big Time.

By: Dave Martinez | June 2nd, 2009

Thanks to the boys and girls at Metrofanatic for pointing this in my direction.

Shep Messing joined the fledgling podcast Four in the Back to share his thoughts on the Red Bulls. And boy, did he ever.

Here are some of his more memorable quotes:

- “This is like trying to turn around the titanic.”
- “Juan Pablo Angel loves Osorio.”
- “They are cursed. They find every single way to lose. Aside from the Seattle game they’re really playing hard for 90 minutes – they just suck when it counts.”
- “I had a crazy ability when it matters to make the big save. It is the inverse of what the Red Bulls are doing.”
- “The ability to make the play when it counts, for me, really makes the difference. And the Red Bulls, they are the worst! The DC United game, the Colorado game last year, time and time again, I don’t know what it is.”
- “Angel is one of the best strikers ever to play in the MLS. He is injured and isn’t telling anyone by the way.
- “They have six or seven (players) you need to trade for a bag of soccer balls. (to which the host asks no names though right?) I don’t have a problem with names, you know me Ken. Coaches in this league, MLS in particular, you can ill afford to give guaranteed contracts to bad players.”
- “So a second division Argentine player who was kicking around in Greece, Pietravallo – he is on a guaranteed contract, he is making 200 thousand dollars – useless to the team.”
- “Dane Richards – played a couple of good games last year against Houston. For me, this is a player who doesn’t see beyond his own feet. He has speed, he can beat a player running at him at a ball at his feet, but for me, I look at high soccer IQ, and I don’t think Dane Richards has it.”
- “ Oduro, who was a mistake, well, they got rid of him.”
- “Khano Smith, to me, is one of the worst players I’ve seen in Major League Soccer, and he is making 150 thousand dollars a year.”
- I am not a big believer that you build Harrison and all of a sudden, 22,000 fans are going to show up.
- You have to win at some point, or as you said, otherwise, you are irrelevant.

He also expressed that he wasn’t afraid of losing his job over his comments. Apparently . . .

So this has to be the most true to word critique from inside the Red Bulls that this team has seen since they took over football operations. And frankly, Messing was speaking from the heart as a former area star and current supporter of New York soccer. He certainly did not put up his guards about the shaky standings of the franchise either. And that is probably why the fan base love this guy so damn much.

Do you think Shep is going to hear it from a couple of the higher ups? Or will the players give him an earful (Especially Khano Smith)? Was he right on point with his scathing review of the Bulls season and history? You make the call. Click the link, take a listen and share your thoughts below.

I love it! I wish there was half this kind of truth on Extra Time. Way to air it out Shep.

Good keeper. Big Mouth. But he speaks the truth and I'm glad someone is saying it. Maybe our absentee lords in Austria will take ear and decide to actually do somethingabout it.

I will listen to it when i get home tonight..but he is right from what you quoted. Angel..who i have been critical of..looks slower..maybe there is something he has injured. This organization is a mess right now.

Oh man! I hate to admit it but Shep is dead on. I'm losing my patience with this f'ing team. I'll have a heart attack if Osorio ever starts the same 11 or even acts like he has a clue as to what he's doing. I've wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt but enough is enough.

Shep Messing is in the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Not relevant, I just didn't know there was one.

I seem to remember when Khano Smith could do something with the ball, although I don't remember when exactly that was.

shep is on target! i totally agree with everything he said (a bag of soccer balls-ouch!) since osorio said he refuses to listen to what the fans have to say, maybe he'll have to listen now. i'll take shep as the new GM any time.

I am with you Cliff, maybe even as a GM. He is right on the money with every comment.

    Dave,

I - and I am sure a few others - feel vindicated by Shep's assessment of certain RB players. I would love to see the damage control by the RB front office, MSG, MLS, CIA, FBI, NSA and all the alphabet soup organizations.

I wonder if Shep went all out to be fired because he is tired of broadcasting the games and trying to paint a rosy picture.

    Cheers
  • Shep tells it like it is. I think every metro fan would agree with atleast 1 point that Shep has made.

But for us fans... what can we do besides..........

    FORZA METRO! ! ! ! ! ! !
  • Cliff
I think we found our new coach!, id love to see Shep be the new metro coach, love the attitude!!!

the king aint wrong. he knows football and has to watch this other game, whatever its called, that the RBs are playing.

I wonder if hes gonna be broadcasting long after this goes out. Usually teams dont like that.

Oh no he dit...ent!!! Ooof, and to think they could have had Mi Amor, an MLS all star, for a pitence of what they pay those UNPROVEN youngsters. Look, many can still bring it over 30, Del Piero anyone?!
