Sylvain Wiltord Linked With Red Bulls Move

By: Dave Martinez | August 16th, 2008

Sylvain Wiltord, of Arsenal and Lyon fame, has been linked to a move stateside – in particular, New York. Though all signs have pointed to a stateside striker, the free agent has become an option.

For those who don’t know, Wiltord is a speedy, diminutive forward/winger, who made his name in Arsenal. The English club paid Wiltord 13 million pounds to join the team in 2000 – at the time, the highest fee paid to a player by Arsenal in club history. With alot of expectations, he faired well, playing along Thierry Henry a bit, and was featured off the bench as his career wained in the Premiership. He won 3 Ligue One titles with Lyon, last playing with Rennes.

As Coach Osorio’s forward search has unfolded, one thing was clear – the ideal candidate would be large, quick, and good in the air. Someone like the Silverbacks Kanji. If that is the case, Wiltord would be eliminated right off the bat. But an attractive forward, who is a proven winner, could change the course quite a bit.

So, is Wiltord the answer? Will he be able to sign for none DP money? Share your thoughts with us.

Ohhhhhh, I ADORE Wiltord!!!! This plus Angel would almost make me a Red Bulls fan. Almost.

I only saw him in a couple of Rennes games last year, but he looked pretty good. My guess is he still has enough gas in the tank for MLS.

(He’s also apparently quite the ladies’ man, and left Lyon in part because of a locker room dustup with another player over that player’s wife. Do a site search for “Wiltord.” You’ll find some fun stuff on the Lyon blog.)

I wonder if Wiltord would be willing to take on a third of a seasons worth of work at non DP pay .. . . .. have him up top with Angel, Rojas at CAM, DVB and Richards at wings, Pietra and Stammler on CDM duty, Cichero sandwiched between Parke and Goldthwaite . . . not bad at all.

I don’t always like that kind of move, but I have to say I think it would be a good thing for both Sylvain and New-York (and the league)

good player, but im not sure. Didnt Orsario say that we would not be getting a forward outside of the states?? If he does come though, great.

I am a big fan of Kanji at ATL Silverbacks. He is a really good player. We will see!

Dave, I had to stop by your blog just to see if you’d left a comment about the game this morning. Your Argentina boys rocked. (Despite that little Hand of God thing.) :-)

we’re good as golden now. And I am so glad it’s Nigeria with the silver. but let’s not get cocky.

anh, why not?! :) it was fantastic!!! and man was it nice to see a shutout vs brasil!! this is WAY too much futbol emotion for this american to contain!!!

Laurie, Laurie…Argentina is beloved by God, we like divine guidance… :) and actually I didn’t think Kun Aguero scored with his hand, but that’s just my opinion and I hardly saw the replays.

Such a good day. If it wasn’t the La Liga offseason I’d be in complete bliss. **sigh**

Laurie – had I the time, I would have done my own post on the game – but as ajani shows, we are all super excited. Especially against Brazil.
