Now Rob remember we actually have two designated player spots. Angel's and Reyna's. Now the problem is, and I don't think MLS is changing the rule for next year, DPs take up $400,000 worth of cap room. Considering the cap is only like $2.5 mil, two DPs would take up about a third of the cap, leaving very little room for other players. So maybe we would be better off not using it. Either way I hope Angel stays.

Beautifully written, as always! Me, I love long winded, especially when the views are accurate. I wait with bated breath to have an exciting midfield provider, a real #10 if possible, and ofcourse my dynamic Colombian forward in the rotation with JPA, please stay!!!

The team ultimately performed beyond most fans expectations. During the season things really reached a low-point but when Osorio had his back against the wall he was able to put together a line-up that was able to compete with the best of the league. I think this team with some minor fine-tuning will be very strong next season. Beyond that we will need to acquire some help up front. Angel will not be around forever (maybe sooner than we all expected) and Wolyniec, while he played a huge role for us in the playoff run, is not the answer either. I do like Wolyniec as part of a rotation in front in the future, but he too is on the downside of his career.

We need to re-sign Dave Van den Bergh and find a true playmaker at the CAM. Cepero was solid in net and should allow for Conway to go on to another team possibly via trade. Parke will make this defense even better next year (if he is returns).

I honestly fear the worst for Angel. Maybe playing in the Final and qualifying for Champions League will make him optimistic. How they use the DP slot will probably factor largely into the decision as well. Osorio is one of the few MLS coaches with European experience, with the right components he will be able to field a team that can play an un-orthodox MLS style (aka Euro-style).

I think leaving Jimenez unprotected is a poor decision, he was great in the playoffs and would be an anchor for our defense for years to come. I would personally switch him with Conway. I cannot imagine Seattle being in the market for a goalie earning six figures and while being unable to play for the first 4 games of 09 due to a drug suspension. Unfortunately I think Jimenez is as good as gone.

All that being said, I really think 09 will be a great season for NY Red Bulls. Sorry for being so long-winded.

Great comments everyone. As far as Angel goes, only time will tell. I fear that the clear lack of service (as indicated in this past game) is making this less fun for him.

The Red Bulls had a great run through the playoffs - who would have thought they'd make it to the cup. In the end the best team in the regular season was the best team in the post season.
