This Just In: Tony Meola is Righteously Indignant. In Other News, The Sky is Blue.
By: Martha | March 27th, 2007
In case you missed it, Meola was quoted whining copiously in the New York Daily News this morning, criticizing (his) former Coach Bruce Arena’s “ridiculous” communications skills. Now, why anyone would be asking Meola’s opinion on anything at this point is beyond me, but somehow he was giving a public forum in which to vent his proverbial spleen, and vent he did.
According to the Great Tony, last season when he was suffering from a weird (truly horrible) bacterial infection that kept him out of training and games for several weeks, Arena let him know by email that he had lost his starting spot to Jon Conway. Oh, and Arena also told Meola he wasn’t being resigned via email, which is perhaps a bit harsh. Needless to say, wor Tony took great offense and, after keeping his mouth shut for several months, let loose with an impressive flow of vitriol at Big Apple Soccer yesterday. Though Arena reportedly did a lot of his national team communication via email (including telling Meola he’d been selected for the squad that earned him his 100th cap), Meola evidently felt he deserved a call or a face-to-face in the case of his RBNY demotion, and is sure that the gaffer “had it out” for him. Of course he did, Tony. Of course he did.
Considering the two have known each other for decades, one couldn’t blame Arena for just having enough of Meola and his attitude. Honestly, they deserve one another — they can sit around thinking about how wonderful they are, and refuse to accept blame for anything that’s ever gone wrong. Then they’ll part, each man 100% sure he really stuck it to the other.
