Transfer Targets: Alfredo Pacheco

By: Dave Martinez | February 20th, 2009

As you may have read with Almedin and I commenting in the last post, the Red Bulls have their sights on yet another Latino National Team Captain in El Salvador’s Alfredo Pacheco. Widely regarded as an effective ball crosser, dead ball specialist and attacking fullback, Pacheco would be certain to add that extra element of pressure missing in the Bulls backline since the days of Todd Dunivant and Marvell Wynne.

And don’t let the fact that he is a fullback fool you – he has netted 28 goals since his inception in the Salvadorian leagues in 2001. And as a national? 64 appearances, 8 goals.

Not bad.

A WINNING CULTURE

I do admire what Osorio is doing with this team. Prior to this season, the Bulls relied heavily on Van Den Bergh and Juan Pablo Angel to guide the ship to the promised land. With DVB gone, a bit of a leadership gap was created. The idea would be that Jorge Rojas, Captain of the Venezuelan National squad, would fill in those large shoes.

Another leadership gap was created when Jeff Parke took off. In came Osorio and Agoos and swooped down on former Metro great, Mike Petke, to handle the mighty task. But, as has been the case since 2006, the fullback positions, respectively, were left out to dry. Pacheco would make the past two years an afterthought, and I am very confident in that. I know many people seem to “poo poo” the Salvadorian leagues, but they do produce excellent attackers and fullbacks. He would be a great addition.

Osorio is creating a winning culture around a franchise that is used to falling on its face. Putting together leaders who have faced pressure situations and stared them down will only serve the youth on this team. JPA is the captain and a consumate pro. Jorge Rojas is a well respected Captain of the Vinotintos, regardless of what we saw last season, and is capable of inspiring through his play. Believe me, I have seen it on the National level. Petke is a hometown favorite and commands instant respect in this area and amongst his peers. Pacheco would be a logical fit, putting a dangerous face behind a none existent wing back attack.

I don’t think I could be any clearer in my support of this move, though many may think otherwise. Share your thoughts with me while I figure out a good weekend poll question . . .

I know many people think “I’ll believe it when I see it”, but I also feel that Red Bulls are going to do so great this year.. If we can get Pacheco, that will only make us so much better in the back and our offense should be excellent (we will soon find out how excellent).. I feel like this will be our year to win our first-ever MLS Cup..
    Let’s Go Red Bulls!

I also agree Pacheco would be a great fit. I think Osorio is doing a vey good job in assembling a deep squad that will be playing the league and two cups this year. I also think that MLS, in the last couple of years, has gone away from recruiting players from the CONCACAF region. There are an incredible amount of great players in the Carribean and Central America.

I agree, Dave. This is very exciting stuff. Bringing in leaders and pan latin flavor is a major factor in keeping Angel here, IMO. These guys are winners and share a cultural understanding of the game.

but regardless I think Osario has a very clear agenda and hes being given the chance to make it happen.

I feel very positive about this teams future. I think the NY futbal culture is changing.

While the players and personnel may vary the identity and character of this franchise and fanbase’s expectation is being sculpted before our eyes

I’ve got the perfect staring 11 for FIFA 09. Just beat Monterrey on world class difficulty 9-0.

    ——Angel—-Kandji——
    ———-Oduro————
    -Smith————Richards-
    —-Pietravallo–Rojas—–
    –Leitch—Petke–Goldthwaite

23 shots, 17 on goal for RBNY
5 shots, 2 on goal for Monterrey

    Angel 5 goals
    Oduro 3 goals
    Kandji 1 goal

I’ve never delivered that bad of a beating on that difficulty level. Its like a track meet on the pitch.

I’ll believe it when I see it — if/when they sign Pacheco, if he works out in MLS, and if the team is good this season relative to others.

That said, I would really love for them to get this whole squad assembled as quickly as possible so that they can start building chemistry.

great analysis, dave. a winning culture and leadership are key. i agree we need to bolster LB and RB, too. we need more than passable defense in those positions — we need attach up the flanks as well. who do you see for the other back?

While I whole-heartedly agree that a winning culture is key, I don’t yet see evidence that we have a winning culture. I think we have a “desire to prove ourselves” culture and we have some players with winning experience, but until we have earned some serious silverware, I’m not sure we can say we have a winning culture…

OOOHH MAN….PACHECO IS STRONG (STRONG CHARACTER TOO, CAPTAIN DEIFINITELY) HE IS A GREAT CROSSER AND GREAT ON 1 ON 1′S MARKING…..WHAT MAKES HIM GOOD IS HIS DECISION TAKING AND FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE COACH ON THE PITCH……HE HAS GOOD HEIGHT, FAST, AND COULD DEFINITELY BEAT LEITCH ON THE LEFT FOR THE SPOT!!! THE ONLY PROBLEM I SEE IS I DON’T KNOW HOW GOOD HE REALLY IS DEFENDING IN THE AIR, WE ALL KNOW HOW OSORIO LOVES THAT…AND ALSO LAST YEAR A FAN CAME INTO THE FIELD, PACHECO THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO HURT HIM SO HE DROPPED HIM, BAM, ONE SHOT ONE PUNCH……..THE GUY HAD A BROKEN JAW AND OTHER INJURIES, THE PRESS KILLED PACHECO ON THAT SO PACHECO ENDED UP PAYING FOR HIS MEDICAL BILLS, I THINK HE WAS ONLY TRYING TO DEFEND HIMSELF BUT THE PRESS SAID NO ONE KNEW………..

I think Alfredo Pacheco is extremely talented and will fit perfectly in the Red Bulls!. Pacheco hits the ball like a rocket and is a great shooter. In addition, his leadership skills in the field as captain will make the Red Bulls Champion of MLS. Pacheco is a class player and a great decision maker. He is strong, smart a great attacker and defender. I compare Pacheco at the same level as David Beckham. Pacheco is a Star. Let’s win the MLS Championship Cup. Go Red Bulls…..

Pacheco is my favorite defense in la selecta. As the captain of it, his leadership will help RBNY and also will give him more experiense to play outside ES. He is a strong defense for el FAS and knos also hoe to give good center in the attacking zone.
    Go PACHECO!
