Villareal readies its Yellow Submarine to pick up Jozy
By: Dave Martinez | June 4th, 2008
Last year after the U-20’s, Villareal’s name surfaced as a potential suitor to our wunderkind, Jozy Altidore. Last month, the speculation and intrigue over a possible Jozy Altidore to Villareal move captivated our audience and really made people think “What if?”
Today, multiple sources are reporting this as more fact than possibility.
La Marca, a Spanish paper which, depending on who you ask, is or is not reputable, reports that Villareal are aiming for both Jozy Altidore and Roberto Flores as two of its top youth targets, in a group that also includes Villagra, a River Plate forward, Valeri of LanĂºs (argentina), or Gremios Brazilion duo of Tiago and Douglas. The idea for Villareal is to sign a few budding stars, loan them to Recreativo Huelva, and reap the rewards of some future talent. And the numbers are placed around the $5 Euros (roughly $10 mil American) mark for our boys services.
Ives is reporting that the Red Bull brain trust is investigating whether or not to shop Jozy, or give him more time with the Bulls.
Steve Goff is reporting that the deal is in its “final stages,” where the Jozy transfer could be announced “in a couple of days.”
Analysis
On the one hand, I am happy for Jozy - the kid has busted his hump for two years, made a name for himself where he had none before, and has done it all in a very professional manner.
On the other hand, where would this leave the Bulls?
I, like many other Red Bull fans and followers out there, was prepared for an Altidore exit by the end of this year. Now, in the middle of this fudged Eastern Conference campaign, the loss of a Jozy Altidore would quite readily and clearly relegate our hopes to the bottom of the 2008 barrel. Even if there was someone to step into Altidore shoes now, that person would still have to find time to gel with an injured Juan Pablo Angel, deal with a question mark at CAM, and bare the load of responsibility for scoring goals (what with a depleted and oft injured midfield to contend with).
Not likely to happen.
LIST OF DEMANDS
Lets face it - a departing Altidore plus a losing squad with little goal scoring ability doesn’t sell anyone seats. The Bulls need all the hype and credibility it can get heading into the make or break 2009 season.
If Jozy should go before this season ends, they need the following to happen to insure the Bulls solvency and respectability heading into the 2009 season:
+ They must make the playoffs. No exceptions
+ Three players must be signed, and quickly, during our summer transfer window. And one of them should be a player of name:
+++++ An attacking Left Wing or a natural CAM
+++++ A capable and experienced forward to replace Jozy
+++++ A left sided defender who can play centrally if necessary (preferably, with height)
+ The team must start winning or showing signs of improvement. If the team is floundering and going through the motions in anticipation towards next year, there wont be enough seats to fill Harrison when the stadium is up. And thats a promise.
+ Any deal below 7 million American dollars is not worth it.
+ Any moneys gained from this transfer must immediately be put into the infrastructure project and youth development.
+ Spend the 500K allocation money wisely!
+ Please don’t try to sell us an Echeverry replacing Altidore scenario. To lose a person of Jozy’s caliber, new and more dangerous blood is needed for a proper healing process to occur (Give us Brian McBride!).
What are your thoughts on all of this? Quite the double edged sword isnt it? You want the kid to advance for himself and our country, but wow, will this throw a monkey wrench into the season!
QUICK EDIT: The New York Times is reporting this as a done deal!
QUICK EDIT: Soccer by Ives is reporting Villareal has signed Jozy for $10 million American!
QUICK EDIT: Marca is reporting Villareal has signed Jozy for $15.5 million American (which is $10 million European)!

jozy can rock the pitch anywhere, but unfortunately for him, so can pretty much everyone else in la liga. kid’s not ready for the big time yet. and it’s too bad, because he could have really made it big in MLS.

Mike, Ive had to make about 10 updates in the past 10 minutes - the news of the confirmation is spreading like wildfire!
15.5 million! More than Dempseys and EJS entire career in MLS. Done with only 25 starts to his name. The kid is special.

villareal/huelva is and isnt the bigtime anonymous. It will be a great learning experience where so ever he goes. In Villa, he has Rossi to interact with. At Huelva? Zero expecations, and plenty of growth time to be had. he is a winner in this either way.
Red Bulls must do the most they can with their 500K allocation, if not, this deal was all for naught.

villarreal came in second in la liga. if that’s not the big time, idk what is.
oops didn’t notice the huelva thing–you’re right, that’s not the big time at all (well ok a little) and actually recre would be an awesome learning experience…i hope he goes to recre, that would be great for him. villarreal not so much.

Ahhh you missed my IS / ISNT qualifier Anony!
But i am with you. Recre would be awesome for him.

I’ll miss him at Red Bulls, but I can’t wait til the moment when Jozy scores against Madrid.

oh man how awesome for him. the huelva thing would be PERFECT for him. gets to play in the top flight of spain and we get to see what he’s really made of. now if i could just have the option of getting to actually watch la liga on tv everything would be gravy.

I think this pending deal has been a weight on Joze all season so far. Hes been a shade of his former self.
That said hes still one of the top young players, if not the top, in the MLS.
Id be shocked if this deal did anything but make Jozy and the owners rich and make the fans sad, bored and miserable.

Nothing to say but Great for him.
Now moving on to the Left footed defender you’re talking about, does Alejandro Cichero ring any bells? Last thing I heard was that JCO was trying to get him but met some barriers set up by Dvo. Italia, but now that the Clausura’s over…
I’d love to have two Vinotintos in the RB squad (as long as they perform adequately of course).

The more Vinotinto the better! (wine as well)
And for all the talk of his lethargic attitude all season, now we know - he was trying to stay injury free for this deal.
I just hope he plays against Argentina so i can see his possible last NY hurrah.

Oh Jozy Jozy. He has scored so many different kinds of goals in his time in the MLS, and I’ve had a great time watching him at Giant Stadium.
I wonder what kind of striker he will really bloom into. My guess (going back to the U-20 world cup) is he’ll become a target man for quality crosses & a real fox-in-the-box goal poacher (ala Trezeguet). The kid has moves, and is strong, but he doesss lack pace.
And I think Jozy would do just fine at Villareal to be hoenst. We see time, and time again that Jozy becomes better, when he is around other better players. Usually he fades out when his team is slacking, or when JPA is out.
Go metro :]

Who is gonna score some goals? Is Echeverry healthy yet? What about that other rookie who had knee surgery? Good for Jos, bad for us.

The other rookie is David Roth, whom if you remember, had the best camp from the rooks and he fell with an injury. We interviewed him a while back - http://redbulls.theoffside.com/players-red-bulls-news-rumors-opinions/david-roth-interview-injury-update-life-of-a-draftee.html
Check back later - working on a piece titled about post jozy red bulls.

is he going to be a bench warmer? i dont know but if vilareal is interested in him i think he is something special, i cant wait till his 21st bd so that he becomes the next kaka or tavez…..what do u think World Player of the Year in 2012?

kaka - I would love that to happen, but he will most likley start with Recreativo and move his way up. Playin time is needed, and a second place Villarreal may not be the place to do it, not right away at least.
His loan to Huelva makes the most sense.
