VIRAL VID: Cricket Anyone?

By: Dave Martinez | February 9th, 2010

New York Red Bulls: Cricket Anyone? from Red Bulls Reader on Vimeo.

Danleigh Borman and Andrew Boyens show off their Cricket “skills” at La Manga.

And please, someone tell me what the rules are to cricket, because I simply don’t get it. Cheers.

The rules to cricket are different every time they are explained to me, to the point where I think people are just messing with me.

    Here’s my attempt:

    Cricket’s basically like baseball, except…

Instead of a pitcher there’s a bowler and instead of a catcher, the bowler is aiming for the wickets. For some reason there are no wickets in the vid above. But trust me, they’re usually there, right behind the batsman.

The batsmen score runs by either a) running between the two sets of wickets (which i guess is sort of like the equivalent of rounding plates in baseball) or b) hitting the ball to the boundary (which is sort of like scoring a home run).

Where it gets confusing if you’re used to baseball is that there are two batsmen “in” at one time, though only one of them faces the bowler at a time.

    Also, no one chews gum.

Well I’m not sure what the rules are to cricket but if Andrew boynes is any good at it it must involve scoring against your own team, being confused and generally sucking. In which case he’s probably exceptionally good at it.

    Dave,

A googly is basically a ball that spins the opposite way to that which the batman is expecting.
