Weekend Roundup! MLS Cup In NY?, Injury Updates, Transfer Rumors, Maldini And More
By: Dave Martinez | February 5th, 2010
Driving into work, just before stepping out of my car for some Dunkin Donuts coffee, I heard one of the rarest sounds to ever emanate from a mainstream New York radio station:
A report on your NEW YORK RED BULLS. No foolin’!
ESPNRadio is reporting the Red Bulls are putting together a “strong bid” to host the 2010 MLS Cup. With league headquarters conveniently located in the heart of the Big Apple, it may not take much convincing to make it happen.
But this is just the tip of the iceberg folks (you like how I am playing on this snow storm stuff huh?! Genius, I know).
Check out some of the news that may have slipped through the cracks this week:
- Kevin Goldthwaite, after successful surgery this past October, is going back under the knife to remove some residual scarring in his abductor tendon. He will be out six weeks or so.
- After six intensive months of rehab, Carlos Mendes is finally back and training with the club. Check out his story on RBR.
- John Wolyniec, meanwhile, is recovering well after taking that devastating, dirty tackle against New England late in the season.
- For what it is worth, Paolo Maldini’s father Cesare called the Maldini to RBNY rumors a complete fabrication. Furthermore, Michael Lewis of BAS completely deaded the issue, citing team source. Needless to say, this rumor will now go on to live in infamy with the Ronaldo, Geoge Weah and Roberto Baggio stories that have let local fans down before.
- Jonathan Fana, a Dominican striker with Trinidad & Tobago’s W Connection, has been linked to the Red Bulls and Chivas USA. But here is the article, in spanish, for those interested. He was a standout player in last years CONCACAF Champions League.
- Remember that keeper we spoke about a week or so ago, Oka Nikolov? Well, he is still being connected to the team, supposedly coming this summer. Though it has crowded German headlines, I think it is simply an echo effect of the original story. As far as I know, there is no truth to the rumor.
- And finally, my FIFA 10 team is looking much better in manager mode now that I have Joel Lindpere at CAM, with Chris Albright and Roy Miller in the back. Just sayin . . . (PS: catch me on XBOX : Uncle Dave 23)
Have a great weekend everyone!
DID I TWEET THAT?! SHO’ DID!

Jonathan Fana scored 3 goals in 5 games during the CONCACAF Champions League Qualifying (as shown on his ESPN stats). Also, looks like he’s the one who scored the first goal in the 2-2 tie vs Red Bulls. Not too sure about him, but I guess it’s worth a shot to see what he’s got..

Anyone else notice the bigapplesoccer article dispelling the Maldini rumors was called “Offside Remarks”? I sure hope that wasn’t a cheap shot…

Great to hear Carlos Mendes is on his way back. An underated centerback who was snubbed by JCO until Mendes proved him wrong in the 2008 playoffs.
A local hero, long time Metro/RedBull, all round chill guy.
No dis-respect to Maldini, but I hope it’s Mendes & Petke at the back for the first game at the new stadium.

Al good find. That’s what I get for going on recollection!
And Michael, good looks on that but Mr Lewis blog has always been called offside remarks. And he is also a very cool guy, believe me. Either way, thanks pal.
And Double C! Mendes gets no respect. Him and Parke were the best cb combo this team had over the past 5-10 years.
