Where’s the Love for Tim Ream?
By: Eric Giacometti | November 3rd, 2010
MLS began unveiling the winners for the regular season awards today beginning with Goalkeeper of the Year along with Rookie of the Year. Donovan Ricketts of LA took home the prize for the top backstop, while D.C. winger Andy Najar beat out Philadelphia’s Danny Mwanga and NY’s own Tim Ream to take home the top rookie honor. And I got a feeling I’m not the only one who’s got a problem with that…
Let’s took a closer look, shall we? Najar made just 26 appearances (starting in 22 matches), good for a season total of 1,983 minutes while Ream featured in every minute of every game. Yes, EVERY minute of EVERY game, aka 2,700 minutes! He is one of only two field players who can make that claim (the other being Colorado’s Drew Moor). Ream has a great deal to do with the fact that New York posted the best goals against average in the Eastern Conference with 0.97 goals allowed per game. Najar scored 5 goals in the 2010 campaign for a team that scored the fewest goals in the league with a mere 21.
Now, that stat may be misconstrued and interpreted that Najar meant more to his team than Ream did. D.C. was a team that was going nowhere fast, while the Red Bulls rode their fast start to an Eastern Conference championship, and the consistency and quality of Tim Ream has plenty to do with that. Perhaps MLS is showing pity on the D.C. scum and decided to throw them a bone after an abysmal season. Am I crazy? Do you think Ream got ripped off or did MLS voters make the right call? I’d love to hear what you all think, leave a comment below and put your 2 cents in.
