You Be The GM!

By: Dave Martinez | October 29th, 2009

generalmanagerYou get a phone call from Red Bull.

It’s Erik Stover.

Is this another automated call to buy season tickets? Not this time.

You are offered the position of teams Sporting Director. And you jump at the chance.

But now what? Well, I turn it over to you -

What would you do to turn around this franchise ahead of the 2010 season?

Here is an example from yours truly:

1 – Aggressively pursue Thierry Henry till the bitter end. The way he is heralded in New York as compared to the way he is riding the bench at Barcelona may make the move that much more enticing NOW (and take advantage of the man’s midlife crisis if he is having one. Worked with Beckham!)

2 – If Henry is unavailable by the start of the season, look towards a name player to fill in the gaps until he is here. Figo would be a nice one year fix for the team, and would ingratiate Red Bull to the Harrison community.

3 – Make signing a CAM the teams top priority.

4 – Draft focus: defense.

5 – Embrace your heritage. There is no reason for the team to diminish Metrostars when the battle has already been won. By putting up classic pics like Clint Mathis in his I Love NY moment on the Arena walls, you will finally highlight the richness of the clubs history, and would extend a much needed olive branch to the teams hardcore supporters.

6 – Along the same lines, continue using past players for outreach purposes. Tony Meola, Claudio Reyna, Gio Savarese, Tab Ramos and the like, whether in management or marketing positions, would be able to command local respect.

7 – Marketing should be aggressively pursued in the Harrison market through grass roots efforts. Local soccer clinics, signings, taking part in community events, hell even open tryouts and the like will enable Harrison to embrace the team as its own. Similarly, RB will have the opportunity to attract the New York audience as well, with a PATH train just a hop, skip and jump away.

8 – Cut down the CDM’s on this team. What are there, like 6 of them now? Time to chop the dead weight.

9 – Emphasis an attacking minded approach to the teams overall philosophy. Let’s face it; 25,000+ fans won’t happen everyday. So it is up to the team to show a quality and exciting team that people will want to revisit time and again (think NHL post “trap” era).

10 – Hire a coach who won’t have to start their MLS education on year one (in other words, Richie Williams).

11 – Create the proper grounds for the teams supporters groups to flourish, as has been done in Seattle. It adds greatly to the in game experience.

See? Easy huh? Well, take a stab at it. What would you do? Am I way off base? Let me know in the comments section. See ya there . . . (and don’t worry about being as long winded as me!)

    1. What was the difference between the 08 and 09 LA Galaxy teams? 08 team gave up 42 goals and this year they are being praised for how well they have been in the back.

    2. (kinda links to #1) DRAFT! Our first pick should be a defender and the rest should be mids(Steve Cronin, Chris Pontius and G. Wallace have all been awesome.)

    3. The dead weight is Rojas, Ubi, Sassano and Krupnik. get rid of them immediatly and get younger players to replace them. Im still dumb founded how JCO couldnt find Fredy Montero even though he was at the top of the league for like 2 years in scoring and he also had “strong ties” in South America. O and I almost forgot that JCO is Colombian and we also just happen to be labeled the NEW YORK Red Bulls. Bigger city than Seattle. I dont know maybe I should have been a scout for poor JCO.

    3. Couldnt agree with you more. HIRE RICHIE WILLIAMS NOW!

    4. If Henry isnt there than we need to get a guy who knows how to control the ball and pass well like Celades did, but obviously better

As a GM, you have to work top to bottom. So here would be my steps:

    1. Hire Richie Williams to a 2 year deal. Once you have the head coach figured out, you can work with him to discuss player signings.

    2. Start dropping dead weight. Once you know who you can get rid of, and how much money you will save, you can look at how much you can spend on future players. Players to drop: Garcia, Krupnik, Rojas, Sassano, Richards, and Ubi.

    3. Start serious talks with Henry’s camp. I highly doubt he will go anywhere before the World Cup, but make sure to get him when the Summer Transfer Window starts.

    4. Draft smart. Draft a couple solid defenders, who will be the future of our back line.

    5. With the money we saved from the dead weight, trade for a solid CAM from somewhere in the league. Someone who already knows how to play in this league, and can make a difference right away.

    6. Don’t build a stadium, build a community. With the team looking good, the front office has to take care of the fans. Clean up the areas around the stadium, and get gated parking lots for people to tailgate in. Everybody wants to come together before the game, and feel like they are a part of the team. Continue having the Fan Zone, but don’t make it just for the kids. Have old players (even from the Cosmos) signing autographs, and mingling with the fans. These fans want to continue building a history. So remember the old players.

    7. Have a good amount of advertisement in the city. Have it on subway cars that go to the PATH station, so people can see that the trains they are already on could get them to the new stadium quickly for a good time.

    8. Get town of Harrison Game Day ready. With a lot of people taking mass transit to get to the game, and not having cars to tailgate with, they are going to need somewhere to eat and drink. So they need to get some bars and restaurants around the stadium who are geared towards the Red Bulls, and soccer in general. The Corner Pub is only for season ticket holders. So all those casual fans who come to a few games, aren’t going to just want to jump off the train, watch the game, and jump right back on the train to go home. They want to be able to enjoy their time in and around the stadium.

    9. Plan international games that will draw a crowd. W Connection drew about 400 people. Barcelona the year before drew about 40,000. Do the math. You need to get the hardcore European fan who is a casual MLS fan to get in the door some way.

    10. Just win baby. If you want to keep these fans coming back again and again, you have to win. New York/New Jersey just wants winners. If you win, they will come. It’s that simple.

That would be my 10 step plan as GM. Enjoy.

Idk if Amado would comeback or if TFC will let him go. I’ll welcome him back if we get him tho.

Great points Shane. 6 should be combined with 10, here’s why. Harrison has plans for new districts around the stadium, housing, shopping, restaurants, etc..so that will still take time until the area is cleaned up and ready to be built on. See Riverbend and Harrison Commons. So, parking should be limited, and in London, everyone heads to the pub to ‘tailgate’. From what I saw, with these projects coming up, there should not be an enormous amount of parking available.

I meant 8, but 10 can be combined with everything, bc that is the MOST important thing to attract fans.

    Great thread Mike,

    marriage suits you.

    My rebuilding plan:

1}Only take Henry if he is committed and only for a 3 yr max commitment. We can always add him later if hes honest about wanting to come here. And I wouldnt break the bank for him. Hes still very skilled and would be a great draw for fans but hes well past his prime and isnt what we need to pair with Angel

2}Commit to Angel as the face of the franchise. Dont let him go.

3}Keep Kandji, Zimmerman, Hall, Johnson, Petke and Waly. The rest are expendable

4}Look to move Richards for a high pick or a player of value. Hes a great young speedster but I think his IQ is lacking.

5}Try to convince Celades to return for 1 more yr

6}Commit to Coundoul as the keeper

7}Commit to Williams as coach for 2 seasons – no lame duck

8}try to pry Viera over as our exception

9}fill out the roster with professionals. Not young guys or prospects or major upside guys. Pros. People who can play their positions and not make retarded mistakes every other game. Not guys like Echevery or Pacheko. Guys like Petke and Celades.

10}focus on landing talent at any position through draft but specific needs are playmaking midfield and defense.
