Angel One Step Closer, Or: Best. Rumor. Ever.
By: Martha | March 28th, 2007
The other day, I geelfully told you about on the rumor that Aston Villa’s Colombian international striker Juan Pablo Angel was being pursued by RBNY to fill that second DP slot, and (help) solve our striker problem. Of course, you could have been forgiven for taking the story with a Hummer-sized grain of salt, particularly after the Zidane and Figo mutterings, and the blatant lies about Robbie Fowler. Today, though, the story resurfaced (Five whole days? That’s a lifetime for a transfer rumor!), this time with even more details: According to the latest scuttlebutt, RBNY and Villa have agreed a fee for Angel, and the only remaining issue now is for the Red Bulls and Angel himself to agree on his salary. Wow.
On one hand, this is awesome — I’m convinced that, after settling in, Angel could transform RNBY. I’m not saying there would instantly be magic all over the pitch, but he’s a very special scorer who has the potential to make a difference every time he touches the ball. Plus, I mean, GOALS! Woo hoo! Ahem. On the other hand, however, sorting out his compensation could be a horrible process. Needless to say, Angel is going to want some money, and if he and his agent insist on a multi-multi-multi-million dollar package, the deal could fall apart. (That said, though RBNY do love to throw money at problems, so perhaps I’m being needlessly pessimistic.)
And I’ll save my questions of when he’d arrive for after the deal has been announced — don’t want to jinx anything by making assumptions. We’ll see what happens from here …
