Sinisa Ubiparipovic Needs a Nickname
By: Martha | February 5th, 2007
I hereby dub him Ubi — any Akron fans out there know what he’s actually called?
Backing up a bit: Sinisa Ubiparipovic is 5′8″ midfielder from the University of Akron and was taken by RBNY in the third round of this year’s Superdraft. For those of you who enjoy bizarre college nicknames: Yes, he was a Zip. We need to try not to hold that against him.
During his senior season, Ubi led his team in points with seven goals and seven assists (he scored 17 times the year before), and was named a regional All-American and MAC player of the year. Even without flashy numbers, he’s gotten a lot of attention from fans of the college game over the past two years, based on both his performances at Akron and those with Chicago Fire Premier in the summer Premiere Development League. Last summer he made the PDL all-conference team and was slated by some as a top 10 Superdraft pick — which either means his worth was wildly overestimated, or that NYRB got a huge steal. I’m voting for option two.
