Bréiner Bonilla Signs With Red Bull

By: Dave Martinez | June 26th, 2009

Bréiner Bonilla of the Colombian second division has been reportedly signed by the Red Bulls, according to colombia.com. Bonilla (no relation to Bobby . . . I think) is a central defender, a position which currently has both starters out due to infractions.

Unfortunately, I do not keep up with the Colo 2nd division, so I have about as much insight on him as the next guy. The signing does come as a bit of a surprise though, since the Bulls currently have four players covering the two CB spots (five if you put the ever versatile Seth Stammler into the equation), and no offensive motor to guide the midfield.

RBNY has not made the deal official yet, but MLS is usually the last source to report on a transfer.

Share your thoughts on this acquisition. And if you know the guy, educate us on what type of player he is!

this is a good player, one of the most important of atletico bucaramanga, he has a excellent free kick, a potent shot. My english is not the best, but i say to all new york red bulls fans that you have buy a really good player.

If you want a better player: search in the web about sherman andres cardenas.

I hope that in addition to this signing (if true) they will finally also sign one of the academy players and or that Austrian guy. Also hope that the Training staff makes it very clear to the existing players that now they are training and playing for their roster spot next year. I would say all of them should be concerned for their spot from now on since every single player is responsible for the current state of the team.

I think this is a good move.. It will give Goldthwaithe (probably misspelled) and Petke some competition in the central defense and he looks like he might be a good addition.. At least better than what we have hopefully..

To my eye, two glaring weaknesses, central defense and up top scoring.

What's with the love fest with Colombian players. Wait! Is it because Osorio?
  • I agree with you Erik. Tough time for a "prospect" to get some love around here . . .

Well, hmmm. Can't say RBNY is very good at scouting talent in South America. But who knows he's young and could, like our other young talents, be a nice surprise. History is just not on his side for now and many people will be critical about every miss step he makes. So lots of pressure for a young kid.
