Contracts! Contracts for Everyone!

Earlier this week, RBNY signed five rookies, a move that apparently filled all the spots on the club’s senior roster, meaning that, were Ansu Toure were to stick around, someone who have to be released to free up a spot for him. (If that’s incorrect, someone let me know — the various levels of roster status is one of the many things about MLS rules that utterly befuddles me.)
As to the signings, they were pretty much surprise-free: Dane Richards, Sinisa “Mr. Sinister” Ubiparipovic, Sal Caccavale, Randi Patterson and Danny Cepero are now all officially RBNY property [insert evil laugh here]. Despite playing for the Jamaican national team, Richards will for some reason count as a youth international, which I totally don’t get. Is the designation based on age, rather than actual international status? I mean, I’m not complaining — particularly since it leaves a senior international slot free for one Juan Pablo Angel — but it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. (Of course, this is MLS, and logic has never been on of their guiding principles. Clearly I shouldn’t be surprised.)
Of the five, the only one sure to see first-team time this season is Richards, whose play throughout the preseason has impressed everyone who happens by. Mr. Sinister has also been playing a lot since training camp started, and it seems logical that he could eventually factor in the team as well, if only as cover for the strikers. At this point, the other three will probably be doing a lot of practicing and playing reserves games.
