Edmundo to RBNY? Eeeeeeexcellent!
By: Martha | April 9th, 2007
Possibly inspired by Chicago’s inevitably very, very ill-advised signing of the volatile (read: “Selfish locker room cancer”) Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Brazilian press reports are suggesting RBNY are considering a move for Palmeiras’ Edmundo. Supposedly, while the player wants to stay at his current club, if Red Bull were to offer him, say, $80,000/month, he’d be willing to make the move. Um, whoa. And RBNY would do this why, exactly? Because Clint Mathis isn’t crazy enough?
Now 36, Edmundo — aka The Animal — has scored an insane number of goals in his career (most of them in the Brazilian league) and played all over the world, including stints in Italy and Japan. Even at his advanced age with clearly diminished speed, he’s still productive and is the leading scorer in the São Paulo State Championship as we speak. Of course, he’s also a nutjob who, among other things, has been sentenced to jail time (never served) for a deadly car accident and lost his mind in a 1994 match against São Paulo, going completely postal and attacking several members of the opposing team.
So, yeah. I think it’s best to assume this is just someone in the Brazilian press making something up on a slow news day. Because this? Unmitigated disaster waiting to happen. That said, however, the meltdown would be fun as hell to watch.

$20 says he gets into a fight (with media, teammates, cops, a streetlight) within 48 hours of arrival. As a young man he was like Mike Tyson crossed with Batigol. He’d put a couple in the back of the net AND get pissed off and punch someone in the same game.

Well that’s most disappoint to hear, Bruno. Man. What’s the point in bringing him in, then?
And if you’ve seen Edmundo play this year — how slow is he, exactly? Could he still score at will in MLS?

Martha,
Edmundo is one of the top scorers of the Paulista league and probably one of the few good Palmeiras players. He is not that fast anymore, but the man got the skills and he knows how to use them. I think for MLS standards he could do ok.
You should go to the Brazil blog. I postd about him last week. He fucked up in a match for the copa do brasil by missing a penalty, and last sunday palmeiras just tied against a small club playing at home, which almost eliminated them from the state league.
After this game, edmundo cried!!!! he said he was facing too much pressure and all that. Ill make sure to get the video of him crying on my blog…Posted from

Bruno — I’ll go check out your blog right now! (Been shamefully not reading it b/c I never watch the Brazilian league — limited football space in my brain and all — but that’s clearly no excuse.)
And I love that he cried. Even though he apparently won’t punch anyone, I no want him to join RBNY again.
