Galaxy v RBNY: Eh.

By: Martha | May 9th, 2007

Todd DThe game ended scoreless but, after extra time, LA had won 3-1 and were through to the Open Cup proper. It would have been nice to advance (Because, you know, a trophy is a trophy, and it’s good to be in the chase for them.), but really I’m more interested in a win at the weekend. And no, I wouldn’t have said that had we won.

The game was cleverly entirely hidden from fans not at the park but, thanks to Ives’ liveblog, we know these important things:

•Apart from the absence of Walrus and Angel from the side, Bruce started his first 11 while LA’s team was very much a domestic cup squad; all of their big guns were on the bench.

•RBNY had far more chances than LA, but Galaxy backup keeper Steve Cronin played the game of his life and kept all but one of them out.

•Dema was sent off for two yellows, once of which was soft. (Please tell me a sending-off in the Open Cup doesn’t mean an MLS suspension.)

•Jozy missed a penalty. Seriously, can’t anyone around here score from the spot? JPA? Walrus?

•Despite it not being his “MLS debut” (thanks, hair-splitting RBNY email minion), Angel came on in the 62nd minute and scored the Red Bulls’ only goal from a lovely free kick.

•Dane played the entire game and reportedly hadn’t slowed a step by the end. I’m starting to suspect the kid isn’t actually human.

•Cobi “I’M RETIRING SOON! EVERYONE, LOVE ME!” Jones got a straight red in the 54th for stomping on Dave van den Bergh. Man, do not touch the Dutchman. He may be too calm to kick your ass, but he has friends. Friends named Dema, for example, WHO WILL CUT YOU. Ahem.

So, now the team comes home (or they got back early this morning) for a little rest and a refocusing on the league — at least no one got hurt last night.

Since no one else is saying it, I have to: the “cut you” line is brilliant. I went to middle school with a kid like that.

Thank you, Jeff — it’s nice to know I’m amusing at least one person who isn’t me. (And middle school? Damn. That’s a hardcore 6th grader right there.)
