RBNY Continue to Work Hard While Others Party in Madrid

Just so you know how these things work, while the Red Bulls were playing LA this weekend, Real Salt Lake were at the Bernabeu watching the Madrid derby. I don’t know about you, but I think maybe we need to seek ties with a more glamorous sponsor. Hmm … How does the New York AC Milan sound?
Anyway, back to the sad world of preseason training in the boring old US. In their second west coast exhibition match, RBNY battled defending champs the Houston Dynamo to a 1-1 draw, thanks in large part to a penalty save by our beloved Walrus. According to the official website’s report, the main threats by both teams came in the first half, with the Red Bulls goal coming as a result of a great sequence that started with Dema Kovalenko (who was captain again, and again played the whole game) and end with a header by John Wolyniec.
As with the LA game, many of the Red Bulls went 75-90 minutes, while Houston played essentially two teams, though many of their subs were brought on after an hour rather than at the half. Among those who went the distance for RBNY was rookie Sinisa “Mr. Sinister” Ubiparapovic, who is getting a ton of time these days. While he’s not received the loud praise being bestowed on his fellow rookie Dane Richards — Ives Galarcep says Richards is ready to start on the wing, should Markus Schopp not be healthy — one assumes all this exposure and field time means he’s at least being considered for a senior roster spot. Ansu Toure, however, has seen his star fall a bit since the team’s arrival in LA. He’s been playing a lot less than he did in Florida, and reportedly isn’t standing out the way he did early.
