Carolina Challenge Cup: Oh Bloody Hell
By: Martha | March 29th, 2007
[T-minus nine days until the games that matter kick off. Are you tingling with anticipation? Just a little?]
Not only did RBNY lose to Toronto last night but, to add insult to injury, the winning goal was scored by Edson Buddle. Edson Buddle! The man who, as a Red Bull, wouldn’t pull the trigger if his life depended on it. The man who, as a Red Bull, would much rather dribble until a defender took the ball than even look at the goal. What, he leaves and suddenly develops an interest in scoring? So not cool.
To make matters worse, Toronto were missing a ton of starters, and had never taken a point off an MLS team before. And yet, somehow, they beat a RBNY that was almost at full strength, missing only Jozy, who is off with the U-20 team, and Marcus Schopp, who is still out injured. (Granted they’d only played one MLS team to this point, but still. It’s embarrassing.) From reading match reports and the always-entertaining game thread at Big Soccer, its sounds like the problems are just where we expect going into the season: Finishing, both from open play and the penalty spot (Dave van den Burgh had a PK saved yesterday, which makes the team 0 for 2 so far in the tournament), and the center of our defense. The midfield is solid and is already holding the team together, they’re just going to need a little help if we’re going to do anything this year.
RBNY close out the CCC on Saturday again Houston, who currently top the table with four points — a win could get us the title. Woo hoo!

Oh, just wait Sam. Mark my words: In a few months you, too, will be standing in front of your TV screaming “SHOOT THE DAMN BALL!” at him.
