Say Goodbye to One Keeper and One New DP
By: Martha | February 23rd, 2007
About that incoming DP Arena hinted at yesterday: Never mind. We’re not signing anybody. Sigh. What did I tell you about the danger of getting our hopes up?
Apparently the near-sure thing has turned into a giant disaster, for whatever reason. According to the reliably vague Arena, the team “had some setbacks” and are now “not ready” to make another signing. To the club’s credit, this does mean they’re not going to run out and sign, say, me to a massive salary, just to add someone to the roster. It’s nevertheless disappointing, though — as annoying as it would be to hear nothing from the club, I wouldn’t mind if they waited to talk about deals until they’re, you know, actually made.
That, however, is clearly not going to be the pattern, what with the team reportedly trading goalkeeper Nick Rimando — a man who once had his own army — back to Salt Lake today but steadfastly refusing to confirm the deal. Ok, sure — the paperwork isn’t done. I get it. But since yesterday they were talking about a big DP signing that was up to a week (or, as it now stands, months and months) off, I don’t see how wanting the deal to be official before discussing it holds much water anymore. I guess trading one of our 14 keepers just isn’t as much fun to talk about as a mysterious high profile signing.
