So We’ll Be Seeing a Lot of Dane Richards, Then

By: Martha | April 10th, 2007

Markus Schopp: Not ugly.Remember Markus Schopp? The Austrian guy on loan from Red Bull Salzburg, who is supposed to be starting on the right side of our midfield? The one whose official website includes a “lifestyle” section? And who got hurt in training camp? Yeah well, forget all about him: He’s now got the dreaded sports hernia and is expected to be out for the foreseeable future, whether or not he ends up having surgery for the injury. D’oh!

So, it looks like rookie Dane Richards — already getting good press from outlets across the country based on his debut performance on the Columbus tundra last weekend — will be getting more time than anyone ever expected this early in the season. Which, obviously, is great for Dane and, unpolished though he is, hellish for the left side of opposing defenses who are going to be facing overpowering pace for 90 minutes straight. His lack of experience with the speed of the professional game, however, could potentially prove costly for RBNY, particularly given that whole struggling-for-goals thing.

Another alternative, maybe, is starting Clint Mathis out on the right wing and letting him attack from there. The result, probably, would be a thin right flank (consisting mostly of Marvell Wynne), with Mathis pushing towards the middle, but it would be an interesting, attack-minded experiment if Arena agrees with those who deem Cletus worthy of a start.*

*I realize the obvious option of simply leaving Dane where he is and replacing Woly with Mathis is there as well, but what’s the fun in that?

Bless you, Martha. For discovering the Schopp personal site. Today, I have lived.
