Captain America on Fast Money: Doh!
By: Martha | April 6th, 2007
So, you know how I told you Claudio was going to be on Fast Money, some CNBC show, last night? Well, like a good RBNY drone who does whatever the official team website tells her to do, I Tivoed the show (8pm?! Like I’m awake at that hour) and watched it this morning while I ate my Wheaties.
After fast-forwarding through about 40 minutes of talking heads (The show seems to feature a panel of financial experts known as “the guys,” even though one of them is a woman. I can’t decide if that’s frightfully enlightened or really offensive.), I came upon The Captain, lumped in with a bunch of viewers who were participating in the show — in turn, not all at once — via their webcams. The only differences between Claudio and the unwashed masses were the following details: a) He got the word “CELEBRITY!” above his webcammed head, as well as a short highlight video of him … winner corners; b) He was introduced as the “best American soccer player EVAR;” c) He was clearly calling in from the next room and not his house, since the background out “his” window precisely matched that on-set. Oops.
Claudio was clearly on the show to pimp tomorrow’s game, and he did his part by mentioning the date and opponent before launching into the meat of his appearance: A complex question on the future of oil and gold investment. Um … ok. After he asked the question, Claudio just sat there on screen, looking shifty because he kept peering out of the corner of his eye at the monitor, and then looking back at the webcam. And he said not another word. (I wonder if the club knew this was going to be his role when they sent him to the show.) Then, to top it all off, the host announced that Saturday’s game was AT HOME, thus send eager thousands to the Meadowlands and torpedoing the entire purpose of the appearance.
Sigh. So close. Back to the old drawing board, PR department.
