Defense Depth Takes Another Hit: Jimenez, OUT!
By: Dave Martinez | December 26th, 2008
Here is a bit of news I didn’t want to wake up to the day after Christmas: Brian Lewis reports Diego Jimenez is gone. Another little surprise; he was on a 6 month loan. Wack.
A complete steal at 17k, Jimenez has taken advantage of being the anchor of the Red Bulls defense for the playoff push and translated it into a contract with Mexican first division squad, Tecos. That leaves the Red Bulls even thinner in the back than Nicole Richie in a bathing suit.
So now what?
The remaining defenders on the squad include journeymen Chris Leitch, Kevin Goldthwaite, Andrew Boyens, Carlos Mendes (who is more of a CDM anyway) and Mike Petke. Throw on top of all of this the minute room Jimenez has made for cap maneuvering, and the Bulls, once again, will face the daunting task of finding quality at bargain basement prices.
At this point, you kinda wish there was a Cichero on the depth charts.
So where can the Bulls look to next? Will they try to find their defensive answer in the draft? Or will they import a player? Possibly trade (again) for some more depth? Let me know what you think.

The new CBA definately needs to include a provision to make contracts public if it doesn’t already. This is rediculous that you can have a guy critical to your defense and not even know that he was on loan. You wake up one day and it’s just …o yeah by the way, he wasn’t ours to begin with.

I agree. And its part of the fandom to mull over numbers and argue with each other where money is spent. It is the extra spice that makes sport that much more exciting.
MLS – here is the message from the fans – from salaries to injury reports – MORE TRANSPARENCY PLEASE!

ouch, this hurts! we really needed Jimenez. it seems like we end up with a make-over on the back line every year. this post-season is getting ugly: we keep pietrafoulo and lose jimenez (wrong order agoos). the only antidote to this flub is keeping VDB. (it’s not too much to ask santa!)

Im not sure any loss of a defender from last years squad can be honestly considered a loss worth worrying about.
Merry xmas. Hope all are well. I just got engaged too.
Yipes!

Ditto on classic! Bummer, and yeah on Chichero but he was a mess, and sure am glad the #17 is freed up once again, as I have the perfect fit for that number!

The carousel that is our defense never stops spinning. Just when it appears as if we finally found a nice young CB to possibly build our backline around this nonsense comes out! Unreal! Obviously I do not know the details of it all but how could RBNY not try to make the loan deal permanent after seeing what this kid was able to do in the postseason? Very disappointing as both a Red Bull fan and an MLS fan.
