Did Somebody Say “Benfica?”
By: Martha | May 3rd, 2007
I don’t know if this was announced before and I missed it or if the the match was only made public today, but I just found out Portugal’s Benfica and AEK Athens are playing at Giants Stadium the afternoon of Sunday, May 27. Have I been under a rock, or is this news to other people as well?
Either way, tickets seem to be on sale to the general public already, thought RBNY claim to have a pile of special, fancy ones set aside for season ticket holders. (What that probably means is you get a password to use which flags you as “sucker” in the system, and you’re instantly are hit with all sort of vague taxes on the price of your ticket.)
This is a weird time for an exhibition match, what with Benfica’s season ending May 20 and the Greek league having wrapped up at the end of April (I could easily be wrong on that last bit — please correct me in the comments if you know your Greek football.), but I’m not going to question it too strenuously, what with it being our last chance to see Rui Costa and all. I know, I know, he’s old and injured and might not come but, really, the chance itself is enough for my to haul my ass back out to New Jersey just a few days after the Chicago match. Come on, who’s with me?
