MLS Says a Resounding “NO!” to Comfort and Convenience

According to Big Apple Soccer, RBNY recently went to the league and said “Hey, fellas. You know how Newark is the single busiest airport in the US, and how every time there’s a breeze over 5 MPH, the whole place shuts down? Well, in order to avoid that nightmare, we’re going to pay for charter flights to away games this year. That’s cool, right?” And the geniuses at MLS, rather than allowing the Red Bulls to spend their money any way they want (except, of course, on players), told them they had to take commercial flights. Seriously.
Can you imagine a further level of idiocy? Me either. Apparently the league fears the Red Bulls would gain some sort of unfair advantage by not sitting on the Newark tarmac for hours on end — it seems that’s some sort of American soccer right of passage, or something. Even if you accept that flying charter creates an “unfair advantage” (and that’s arguable), why is it unacceptable for team to spend its own money on something that benefits its players? I mean, perish that crazy thought, right? Better put a stop to the construction on Red Bulls Park next!
Sigh. It just wouldn’t be MLS if The Powers That Be weren’t regularly making outrageously counterintuitive decisions, would it?
