MSG, RBNY Prepare to Spectacularly Mishandle TV Coverge
By: Martha | March 16th, 2007
The good news this week is than an agreement has finally been reached to get RBNY on TV: MSG will reportedly be carrying all the matches not on national TV, so we no long have to freak out at the thought of not being able to see any road games, or missing those for which we’re too lazy to trek out to the Meadowlands. The bad news, however, is so troubling it almost overshadows the good.
Not only are the network and club on the verge of dispensing with such foolishness as the pre-game show and the Metro Soccer Report, but they’re also considering NOT SENDING THE BROADCASTING TEAM TO AWAY GAMES. Oh no, never fear — this doesn’t mean those games won’t be on. It just means that Shep and JP will be doing the games sitting in an MSG studio, watching monitors. Yes, seriously. What the hell is this, Gol TV? And those games are abroad, so they have an excuse. You’re telling me it’s too hard to get a crew to freaking New England? Too expensive? Please. I understand that the club suffered huge losses last season and feels it needs sponsors to be able to invest money in the broadcasts, but by the same token, why would a club willing to go $14 million in the red last season choose this issue on which to pinch pennies?! It’s a freaking joke.

One more thing not to look forward to this year. What’s next, building the new stadium without any type of seating?

Jesus, Rich, don’t even joke about that — I wouldn’t put it past them at this point.

Just wait until Gus Johnson is named the new lead announcer for your games. Then you’ll know real pain!

Clyde Frazier I would love, but Gus Johnson? God help us all.
