RBNY Welcome the Galaxy Back from Holiday With a Little Defense
By: Martha | March 5th, 2007
(I know the Galaxy were ostensibly in Bermuda to train, but come on. You know their lives were much sunnier, warmer, and more blissful than the ones the Red Bulls were living in the freezing cold, rainy Meadowlands last week.) The Red Bulls were doubtless beyond thrilled when they finally touched down in LA late last week to begin their west coast training stint. Hell, I would be surprised if a few of them didn’t run out and kiss the nice, warm tarmac when the plane landed.
So, Saturday morning, the Red Bulls faced a very tan Galaxy squad in NYRB’s first game since they got back from Florida. While LA essentially played two diffent squads in the two halves, New York seemed to see the game as a bit of a testing ground for some new and/or young players, many of whom played all 90 minutes. Really, the squad was a bit of a mix-and-match: For example, no Reyna and no Walrus, but alongside Dane Richards, Sinisa Ubiparapovic and fellow newbie Dave van den Bergh, folks like Wynne, Kovalenko and Stamler also played the whole match.
The good news is that Jon Conway played well, John Wolyniec and super-rookie Richards connected well on several occasions, and the great Dema wore the captain’s armband (and, as you would expected, picked up a yellow card). The bad news? No goals. Even though it’s just an exhibition match, the goose egg doesn’t do much to make me feel better about our potential striker problems.
