Suddenly, I’m Less Sorry I’m Out of Town This Weekend …
By: Martha | April 12th, 2007
When I received the unfortunately news that I have to go out of town for work this weekend and won’t be able to attend the Dallas match, I was stunned that anyone would be so foolish as to schedule something during the Red Bulls home opener. What is wrong with these people?! Once I stopped being stunned, I was pissed. Then bitter. And, finally, resigned. It was at this point that I stopped checking the long-range forecast at weather.com, since I wouldn’t have get to sit outside all Sunday afternoon.
Fellow RBNY — among many other things — blogger Mr. Fish, however, is heading out to Meadowlands for the match Sunday and has been diligently checking the weather. And the news, my friends, is not good. Assuming the weatherman is right (Which, it must be said, is not exactly a foregone conclusion.), those of you going to the game will be facing some serious nastiness, to the tune of a high in the 40s — which will feel colder, thanks to the lovely wind — with rain and, possibly, snow. YIKES. Of course, as horrible as this sounds, it’ll be warmer than the majority of the games played last weekend, so I supposed that’s something. Just sit there as you turn to ice and chant: “At least I’m not in Columbus. At least I’m not in Columbus.”
Apart from the issue of physical comfort, of course, there’s also one of attendance. As Mr. Fish rightly points out, the great majority of tickets sold to any RBNY game go to people who pick them up just for that game, rather than diehards or season ticket holders. How many of those people do you think will be out in the rain Sunday? Seven? The already cavernous Giants Stadium is going to feel positively deserted, and will look awful on TV; that, in turn, could make people think it’s not worth heading out in the future. Hopefully that’s just me being pessimistic but, just in case, I think it’s best we all close our eyes and pray for sun.
