The Case For Richie Williams
By: Dave Martinez | September 23rd, 2009
Kristian Dyer over at ESPN makes an excellent case for Richie Williams, who is playing the David role against an Austrian Goliath as he tries to fight for and secure a position as the permanent head coach of the Red Bulls squad.
And there is a lot of reason why the fans and players are pulling for the explosive, diminutive coach. As Dyer points out, when you look at Williams and MLS, you are practically talking about a lifer. This is a guy that has seen the leagues growth, understands the leagues mentality, and has probably lost about as much hair as the leagues largest fan bases trying to understand and manipulate the MLS rule books. He has also been successful and effective in his short rescue stints at coach. The results speak for themselves.
Of course, I tend to agree with Dyers assessment – Red Bull is looking at overseas options before they even take a whiff domestically. Mind you – these are the same owners that allowed the ineptitude of Osorio/Agoos to reign throughout 2009, unhindered, and practically, unsupervised. So to say that a string of wins at the end of the season will catch the Austrian Overlords attention seems to be a bit of a pipe dream. But Williams is certainly playing for a job – whether here, or elsewhere.
