Welcome Welcome’s! Honduran Trialists on their way

By: Dave Martinez | July 8th, 2008

News out of Central America is that Jeff Agoos has sent out the paperwork to Arsenal and Motagua of Honduras, offering both young striker Georgie Welcome, and his cousin, Shannel Welcome, a five day trial with the Red Bulls.

Georgie Welcome is a youth prospect hero for the Honduran side. For those who are wondering “George Who?!,” he is that lanky kid who downed the US U-23 team in the meaningless semifinal with a 108th minute strike. Thats who.

Much less if known of his cousin Shannel, who is on reserves with Motagua.

THE HITCH

Of course, nothing is ever etched in stone with this franchise. According to La Prensa in Honduras, George Welcome made an impromptu appearance in Honduras to speak with the Olympic coaching staff. Originally, he was expected to leave from France directly to join the Bulls.

Basically, after his heroics sent them into the Olympics, he has been excluded from the first teams list. Slighted, he has put all else aside to rectify this situation. In his own words, “I deserve (to be on the U-23 team) to be there and the team supports me as well (has his back).” Once the situation is resolved, or at least explained, Welcome will continue with his trial ambitions.

The last time Welcome was linked with the MLS was a try out with New England this past May.

Osorio is keeping to his promise - almost daily, new names are being volleyed about. Be sure that the Red Bull Lockerroom is walking on egg shells.

I love all the talk, but what I love more is the ACTION coming out of the front office. This team should be one of the premier teams in the league based on location alone (what international soccer star WOULDN’T want to live in NY over Boston/DC).
Osorio isn’t just gonna make heads roll, he’s gonna cut some checks as well and that’s the best way to build a team, cut the fat and add some meat.

Its enough to almost make you feel sorry for the current RBs.

We’ve supported them and now their jobs are being taken out from under them.

Oh well, its not like they’ve stepped up.

Gotta raise your productivity or your job will get shipped overseas kid!

*Bienvenido* ! As we are the 3rd lowest goals scored in mls, we need 2 delanteros immediately. 1. youthful to groom for long term 2. My spectacular So. American favorite for immediate impact, short term. Next year, bring in a Crespo type with our freed up DP or at least a better cash flow! Using 2 forward DPs would work, if you can get a scoring tandem off Rojas, whom I hope can be our Valderama/ Del Piero!

Hey Martha - Crespo is looking into a long termer career ending contract with Inter. And they seem interested!

But I agree - a quality, young striker to replace Jozy is a must.

As for the current RB’s, one has to hope they wont tank the rest of their time in uniform. I am sure Osorios outlandish comments havent earned him any friends in the lockerroom.

Thats true Dave, but it could also have the opposite effect. Knowing that they’re places aren’t safe might inspire some.

Also: think about the damage the 6+5 would do to the MLS

I am so not for the 6+5. Not for this growing league. It simply can not afford to go in that direction.

Why must everything be so all encompassing? They should make exceptions in 6+5, especially for smaller, growing leagues.

btw - I agree - many players will be inspired to play harder. But does an ultimatum HAVE to be the way to awaken your players? Shouldnt the starting opportunity have been enough? Food for thought.

The way I look at the 6+5 is that its GREAT for countries that are net exporters of talent (France…maybe Spain…maybe Italy) and HORRIBLE for net importers (England, Scotland and USA) and WORSE for small leagues (MLS, SPL). So why implement a rule that would only help Large leagues in some countries and possibly stifle the smaller leagues even farther.

Well - why would that same governing body eliminate participation in areas of high altitudes?

    Its all ridiculous.

Here is the equation - league in its maturity, it can work. A league in growth, and its stifling.

Look at how Becks has improved Donovans game. Look at Schelottos impact on a young Crew Squad. Look at Emilio, Fred, Gallardo and the other imports in DC showing the Americans how to do it. Or the myriad of imports on the TFC squad. Americans can benefit from that kind of presence on their squad. Any player in any growing league would.

    thats repulsive.

do I understand correctly? 6 of the 11 players have to be eligible to play for the national team?

But clearly this rule is not enforced at all. Italy for example. England too. Inter and Roma are both majority international, I believe. Certainly Inter.

This reminds me of when Mussolini tried to make calcio completely Italian. Sicking

Oh yea, and there has been quite the outcry. It is in the process of being enforced. Currently, its still a free for all.

But think about it. 6 players would have to be American out of the 11 fielded. For a growing league like MLS, its better to bring in more quality oversea vets than it is to saturate the league with American youngins (because you know that is what would happen).

I despise the rule. Its dumb. It would kill our growing leagues progress. There have to be stipulations.

Yeah 6+5 is EVEN WORSE for our National team, imagine in Dempsey, Adu and Alitdore could only play in the MLS/LHUSOC (you know what that is…hint: RBNY just got bounced) and MAYBE Superliga instead of the EPL/Champions League
