Whither Angel? Update: He’s Coming, He’s Coming!
By: Martha | April 16th, 2007
Despite persistent, allegedly informed rumors that it’s going to happen, there’s still not a peep from RBNY on the Juan Pablo Angel deal. Though yesterday’s updates indicated Aston Villa had waived the potentially troublesome transfer fee (the clubs were allegedly $800,000 apart), Ives Galarcep is reporting that the issue was still on the table yesterday, and could possibly have kept the deal from going through.
After all, as Ives points out, if the Red Bulls just wait until summer, they could get Angel on a free rather than spending nearly $1 million on his signature. While anyone who doesn’t want him to be here this second is out of their damn mind, one can understand RBNY’s resistance to paying that much for a few extra months service.
It’s a tough one for me: Nice to see RBNY being rational for once but, at the same time, the way they have thrown money around in the past, you’d think this might be a valid place to splash some cash: The team would improve by leaps and bounds virtually instantly, and the press attention would be much more significant now than during the summer, when Angel’s arrival would be blown away by the Beckham whirlwind.
All that might be moot at this point, though — the transfer window is closed, and nobody’s saying a word. Let’s hope the club are planning a Big Reveal, rather than sitting tight because there’s nothing to announce.
Edit: RBNY will announce the signing tomorrow. HURRAH!

That is a great signing. He still can play!

That’s the most significant move in a while in the MLS. Great pick up for the Bull.

Totally agree with both of you — he’s a name which MLS love, but also has quality. I’m incredibly stoked about this season all of a sudden (despite that it’s sure to take him a while to settle in).

Hi. I am an Aston Villa supporter from Birmingham in the UK. I am currently sitting in the office, nursing a hangover, about a couple of miles from Villa Park. I have only read about the transfer news this morning with the alleged transfer of Angel to NYRBs. Angel is a player, whilst not a prolific goalscorer, is much respected by most Villa fans and he has scored some important goals for us. However, times are changing at Villa Park and the revolution means that Angel will probably be surplus to requirements. I’m sure he will do very well in MLS and wish him the best for his future.
